The first week in a new home is busy. These are the security steps worth doing first, in order.
Day one
Rekey or change every exterior lock, including the door from the garage. Reset any keypad deadbolt codes and the garage door opener code. Builders and previous owners often leave codes active.
First week
Check side gates and add locks if they have none. Make sure sliding doors have a working latch and a bar or pin. Put a video doorbell on the front door so you see deliveries and visitors.
First month
Decide on cameras for the driveway and side yards, and an alarm with door sensors if you want one. Plan it once so the wiring is clean.
Cars count too
If your household is down to one key for a car, now is a good time to add a spare. It costs much less than a lost-key call later.
Keep it simple
You do not need everything at once. Locks and codes first, then visibility (doorbell and cameras), then alarms.
