It happens to everyone: keys on the seat, door shut. Here is how to handle it fast and without damaging the car.
If a child or pet is inside, call 911
A closed car heats up fast in Southern California, even on a mild day. If a child or a pet is inside, call 911 first. Then call us.
Tell us exactly where you are
Orange County lots are big. At South Coast Plaza, Irvine Spectrum or Fashion Island, give the nearest store entrance and the level. At the beach, give the lot name or the lifeguard tower number. In a parking structure, give the level and the row. It saves real time.
Do not use a coat hanger
Modern doors have wiring, airbags and window seals inside. A hanger or a slim jim can damage them and cost more than the lockout. We use non-damaging entry tools made for this.
If the keys are lost, not locked inside
Then it is not a lockout, it is a lost key, and we can make a new key at the car. Have your ID and registration ready if you can reach them.
Avoid lockout scams
Be careful with ads that show a very low service call price and then add charges at the car. Ask for the total on the phone. In California, a locksmith must be licensed, and you can ask for the license number.
